Progress made at Drake Power Plant

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado Springs Utilities said workers have made considerable progress in repairs to the Martin Drake Power Plant.

A fire damaged part of the plant in May.

"We've had construction activity underway basically since right after we had access to the facility," said Daniel Higgins, interim general manager of energy supply department at Colorado Springs Utilities.

The fire damaged units 5, 6 and 7. Unit 5 had the worst damage.

CSU plans to have unit 6 running again by July and Unit 7 running this fall. According to the utility company, that will bring Drake to 80 percent of its capacity, bringing down electric costs.
