PUEBLO, Colo. - Pueblo Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting. It happened at Arthur St. and Abriendo Ave.
Police say it started around 11:15 this morning, when police went to a domestic disturbance call in the 900 block of Evans.
Officers say a male suspect came out of the house and shot at the officers. There was a foot pursuit down an alley to Arthur St. and Abriendo Ave.
That's where the suspect was shot by police. He was taken to Parkview where he died about an hour later.
Three neighbors said they heard 8 to 9 gun shots fired in rapid succession, but never heard the suspect's first shot. One neighbor said he has years of experience with guns and he specified that he heard 9 shots from a semi-automatic gun. He said the officer's gun fired all the shots. He didn't hear anything indicating there were shots fired back and forth between the suspect and officers.
"All I could feel was the sound of the gun blasting off the kitchen windows and it was freaking us out a little bit," said neighbor John Gatchel.
Gatchel and four other neighbors said gun shots were they last thing they expected to hear in this neighborhood, especially on Christmas. Neighbors said this is a safe neighborhood with no incidents like this.
"I've been here two years and only really seen the cops here one other time," said neighbor Tomas Gardunio.
Gardunio said two neighbors were almost caught in the crossfire. He said the pair saw the officer shoot the suspect. The man and woman ran down the alley and hid behind Gardunio's house.
The pair rang Gardunio's door and insisted on coming inside. They told Gardunio someone was trying to "shoot them." Shortly afterward, Gardunio's neighbor took the pair to the police so they could rehash what they saw with investigators.
The police department's Crisis Intervention Team is investigating. The two officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol following incidents like this.
