Rally for state Sen. Giron opposes recall effort

More than 100 people attend Saturday gathering in Pueblo

Giron Vows To Fight Recall Effort

PUEBLO, Colo. - Colorado Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia was among the attendees of a rally in Pueblo to support state Sen. Angela Giron in her fight against voters unhappy with her role in passing new gun control laws.

More than 100 people gathered Saturday at the Pueblo County Democtatic office for the 3 p.m. event.  Giron and Garcia, along with several local party leaders, spoke to the audience.

"I really have no idea where (opponents) are on their amount of signatures," said Giron.  So we're just not going to take it for granted.  In these last two weeks, I've decided to get in there and get involved."

Garcia said he believes opponents of the new gun control laws misunderstand what they're intended to accomplish, or haven't taken time to educate themselves about the laws.

"I'm a gun owner and user," said Garcia.  "I don't feel any of my guns and the things I like to do (with them) are in any way at risk.  The people who are at risk, are the people who are convicted felons, people who shouldn't have a gun."

Giron said she's disappointed that her volunteers have been subject to nasty comments--including racial insults--from recall supporters.

"I don't understand why they can't make their point without being vicious," she said.

The petition signatures are due June 10, said Giron, after which the Secretary of State's office has 15 working days to verify the signatures, followed by 15 calendar days for Giron supporters to review them.  Then, if the signatures are determined to be valid, Gov. John Hickenlooper has between 45 and 70 days to schedule a special election.

Giron said a special election will cost taxpayers $250,000.

"I hope it won't come to that," she said.

Giron has a year remaining on her first term in the Senate, and plans to seek re-election.
