COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado Springs Police are investigating an attempted robbery at a bank that is no stranger to crime.
Someone walked into the Academy Bank branch at Briargate Boulevard and Union Boulevard at 10:51 a.m. on Thursday and attempted to rob it.
Police told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that a security guard stopped the robber before he got inside the bank, and the crook ran away.
It's the latest in a string of crimes targeting the bank, which has been robbed five times since January. The robbery in January has since been solved, police said. The four others have happened since May, and police said they believe the same man is behind them.
Less than two hours later, police say the same man robbed US Bank on Garden of the Gods Road near Centennial Boulevard.
Police think the robber's confrontation with the security guard scared him from his usual targeted banks and into a different area. Detectives believe the man probably lives in the northeast side of Colorado Springs.
"It's our belief that he's probably a north-side boy. I couldn't say exactly where but we do think probably the Briargate area," said Sgt. Dale Fox, with the Colorado Springs Police Department. "We think that he was spooked today so he went out of his normal area and came down here."
Police say the man in the most recent attempted robbery was wearing jeans, a black cap, a gray hoodie, sunglasses and sneakers.
He's described as a white man in his 20s with a very thin build. He has medium-length blond hair, police said. He has no facial hair and has some acne on his face.
Police say the man initially ran away but probably got into a vehicle. There is no vehicle description at this time.
Jackson Elementary, in Colorado Springs, was placed on lockdown as a precaution Thursday afternoon after a nearby bank was robbed.
That lockdown has now been lifted.
