Royal Gorge Fire containment now at 65%

Royal Gorge Fire update, residents say thanks

CANON CITY, Colo. - Firefighters called the Royal Gorge Fire 65 percent contained late Friday night.

The fire remains at 3,218 acres.

On Friday, fire crews burned some acres inside the burned zone which accounted for a lot of the smoke Fremont county residents saw.

Fremont County leaders will provide dumpsters for disposing of spoiled and/or contaminated food through the weekend for those residents returning to their homes now that Highway 50 has reopened.

Resources on the fire include 384 personnel. Rocky Mountain Area Incident Management Team B is coordinating 2 Type-1 crews, 8 Type-2 crews, 1 Type-1 helicopter, 1 Type 3-helicopter, 14 engines, 3 dozers, and 7 water tenders.

Close to 200 residents lined Highway 50 near Veterans Park to thank those firefighters as they went off-shift Friday night.
