Scam attempts to steal from Nate Leon's family

stealing from Nate leon

PUEBLO, Colo. -

The family of a murdered Denver man said someone is stealing donation money meant for his kids.

Nathan Leon was the sole provider for his family. Police said he got caught in Evan Ebel's deadly crime spree, that included the murder of D.O.C Executive Director Tom Clements.

Leon's father-in-law lives in Pueblo and said someone is taking advantage of the tragedy, to rip-off people who want to help.

He said his family needs the help, but be careful how you donate, because someone, is trying to steal your money.

"He has seen a way to make a profit from my family loss and he's going to do it. Its horrible. The guy has to have a very sick mind to do something like this," said Barnhart.

Gary Barnhart doesn't know how much has been raised by the thief..

"My daughter has a call to the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office about this," said Barnhart.

The sheriff's office confirms it's investigating, but couldn't tell us who the main suspect is.

"We think we know who it is," said Barnhard.

He said it's a man claiming to be his son-in-law.

Barnhart said the flyers in black and white are the makings of the scam artist.

They are being passed out to businesses in Pueblo, asking for donations.

"He sees a way to provide for my daughter Katie's loss," said Barnhart.

The flyers in color are the real deal and the money collected in jars throughout the city are going to Leon's daughters.

Barnhart said the Eagles were trying to put a fundraiser together for Leon's daughters, but may back out now because they were contacted by the scam artist.

If you want to help, you can donate to the Nate Leon Fund at Power Credit Union. Barnhart is one of the only people with access to  that account. There will also be a fundraiser April 20th at the SidePocket Hall in Pueblo on 4111 Club Manor Drive from 5:00 p.m. To 10:00 p.m.
