School security on high after rumors

Southern Colorado School Safety

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Rumors run rampant on social media websites, and parents in Southern Colorado are worried schools are under the threat of violence.

The El Paso County Sheriff Office sent more deputies patrol schools in Falcon School District 49 and other districts in unincorporated El Paso County. Schools wanted the extra security the day before winter vacations.

"We are all really in a heightened level of awareness, a level of sensitivity regarding school safety right now," said D49 spokesperson Stephanie Wurtz.

There were rumors of acts of violence on December 21st at a number of schools in Southern Colorado, and El Paso County deputies said they investigated everything.

"Although we investigated all of those incidents, all those rumors, and were not able to substantiate any of those threats, we wanted to make sure we were very visible in the schools," said Lt. Jeff Kramer with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

Fremont County, Florence, and Cañon City also increased patrols in schools for today.

The rumors proved to be just that, as there were no incidents reported today.

D49 said it will re-evaluate its need for a higher number of school resource officer after the winter break.
