Sheriff's Office: Scammer impersonating deputy in attempt to rip you off

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says someone posing as a deputy is calling people, telling them they owe a fine and demanding a credit card number to pay it.

Two people have reported receiving the call. In both cases, the would-be victims called the number back and it returned to an internal number at the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office says the scammer is using a smart phone app that allows you to enter a number other than your own so the recipient of the call believes it is coming from somewhere else.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says it never calls and asks for money to be paid over the phone for any reason.

Anyone with information about this situation, or who believes they may be a victim is asked to call 719-390-5555.
