ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Despite the shutdown of the federal government, the Air Force will be playing in the Kendall Hockey Classic this weekend in Alaska.
The Anchorage Daily News reports the Air Force has twice taken part in the Anchorage tournament but flew here on a military plane.
The University of Alaska Anchorage normally pays for 13 plane tickets per visiting teams. But in order for the Falcons to participate this year, UAA will split the cost of the required additional tickets on a commercial airliner with the Air Force, about $11,000 each.
Seattle-based Alaska Airlines, a sponsor of UAA athletics, helped secure airline seats for the Air Force players and staff.
The tournament starts Friday and also features last year's NCAA runner-up Quinnipiac and the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
