Soldier rushes to little girl's rescue after crash

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - You could say Capt. Oscar Delgado was in the right place at the right time.

On Feb. 25, he headed to work at Fort Carson early in an attempt to avoid traffic.  Instead, he was the first person to arrive at the scene of a two-vehicle crash at U.S. 24 and Marksheffel Road around 5:45 a.m.  Police say one vehicle ran a red light and T-boned the other.  Instead of driving by, Delgado pulled over and rushed to help.

"I went immediately to go check on the driver," Delgado told KRDO NewsChannel 13.  "Pink pajamas caught my eye.  As I approached, I saw a little girl unconscious."

Delgado said he was guided by thoughts of his own children and his military training.

"I was just thinking about my girls. I have four girls at home," Delgado said.  "That's when I approached her and I remembered my soldier first responding training which is try to clear the airway and try to stop the bleeding."

Delgado performed CPR on the girl who he describes as being no more than 3 years old.  Finally, she started breathing.

"She started making breathing noises like she was trying to breathe," he said.

Delgado also put pressure on a head injury the girl suffered and explained the severity of the injury to paramedics once they arrived.  After giving a statement to police, Delgado headed home to clean up, kiss his girls and go to work.

"I hear a lot of stories like these when people say it happened so fast," he said.  "It seemed like an eternity to me.  From the time that I opened my car to the point where the pink pajamas caught my eye, it just seemed like it took me forever.  My legs felt like cement."

Delgado said he doesn't think the family knew that he was there to help.  But he can't help but think of her and wonder how she's doing.

Delgado is a Fire Support Officer with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 3rd Battalion, 29th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

Delgado is KRDO NewsChannel 13's "Wear Red Friday Hero."  Every week KRDO NewsChannel 13 features a hero.  This person does not have to be in the military, but can be.  It could be a military spouse, someone who works with our military -- anyone who puts a smile on the faces of those around him or her. If you know someone who deserves recognition for what they do, nominate them to be our "KRDO Wear Red Friday Hero."
