Springs residents could soon pay more for utilities

CSU Proposes Rate Increase

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado Springs Utilities is asking for a rate increase in its 2014 budget.

The increase is of 4.7 percent. In a typical monthly residential bill, that would equate to $9.37. The water rate increase was approved two years ago. It's electricity and gas that are on the table.

A small part of the money will go toward higher pay for employees. Right now, 64 percent of them are paid below market average.

A big part of the money will go toward the city's water supply and putting environmental control on the city's core plants.
