Steady stream of voters keep polling places busy

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Voters were in line before Senate District 11 polling places opened Thursday to make sure their voices were heard in the race for State Sen. John Morse's seat.

The El Paso County Clerk and Recorder's Office opened four polling places at 8 a.m. Voters stood in line for 30 minutes waiting to cast their votes at the polling place in Centennial Hall downtown.

It's the state's first ever recall election.  El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Wayne Williams estimates 30,000 people will vote in the recall election.

By noon on Thursday, 1,800 people had voted at the polls. The El Paso County Clerk and Recorder's Office had collected 1,600 absentee ballots by 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

David Hughes was one of the first in the door at Centennial Hall's polling place.

"I'm absolutely against the gun limitations," said Hughes.

Hughes wants Morse out of office. Just down the line, Chris Colean wants to make sure Morse stays.

"I'm also very interested in having better gun control so that's my reason," said Colean.

Mark Hopewell came out to vote, but he wasn't happy about it.

"We oppose it, having the election at all. It's an egregious waste of taxpayer money. Just because they don't vote the way you do, you don't elect them the next time," said Hopewell.

Bob Martin disagreed. He said this recall election is necessary.

"I believe in our Second Amendment. I've belonged to the NRA forever. Then this guy come up and want to throw us out," said Martin.

Joel Beck has voted in every election. He said his decision was important and private.

"Before my wife passed away, I was married to her for 43 years. And of those 43 years, I never discussed who I voted for and she never knew how I voted," said Beck.
