'Stranger danger' class may have saved 2 young kids

Man tried to lure 8-year-old and 10-year-old with candy

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A man tries to lure two kids into his car in Colorado Springs but instead of being fooled, they got away, and their parents called police.

Police were called to the area of Buena Ventura Street and North Walnut Street around 9 Sunday night.

Police say the man pulled up to an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old and asked them if they wanted any candy.

The two children then rode their bikes away, down a path where the man could not follow them. The children went home and told their parents about the incident, who then called police.

The man is described as Hispanic, between 30 and 40 years old and with a bald head.

Police say the two children had taken a class on "stranger danger," so they knew how to respond in that type of situation.

But a local martial arts instructor says while they were lucky, they should have fled even sooner.

Isaac Costly works for Calvary Family Martial Arts and Fitness.  He's been involved with martial arts for more than 40 years and gave KRDO a quick demonstration on what to do.

Costly says while it's good to get a description for police, it's not good advice for a child, because that means they spent too much time with the stranger.

"The only thing that can save that child is gaining distance and maintaining distance.  Don't interact with that person; it may be too late, and he may be able to get out of the car and get his hands on you," said Costly.

Costly advises kids to take three steps back if they notice a stranger approaching, then yell "no," then, run away.  He says don't run in the direction the car is going; turn the opposite way.  He also says to run toward other people if possible and yell "fire," not "help," to get attention.
