Students walk out of Wasson to protest possible closing

High School Student Walkout

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A group of about 40 students walked out of Wasson High School Tuesday, to protest a proposal to close the school.

The walkout came as school board members discuss a dozen changes to District 11. Closing Wasson is one the proposed changes. Nothing has been finalized, but just the idea of closing the high school worries students.

"I feel angered," student Eddie Chavez said. "I feel that District 11 has basically given up on us and given up on the children."

The walkout almost didn't happen. Chavez and two other student leaders came out, with school officials' permission, to tell media it wasn't taking place. They were told participating in the protest would result in suspension. But as the three student leaders spoke with KRDO NEWSCHANNEL13, a group of about 40 others walked out in protest.

"We love our school, we are Wasson T-Birds, and we're not gonna change that," Caitlynn Komer said.

Students said their school is special. They don't want it to close.

"Teachers love you here, they actually care. Teachers go beyond their point to see you rise," Chavez said. "And I feel that if you close this down, you're closing all these opportunities to these kids to be somebody in life."

Students said they have been to discussion meetings with the school board, and they've talked to officials. But they said they don't feel like they have been listened to.

A district spokesperson said the walkout was a disruption to the educational process, and it wasn't approved by the school principal. She said the school principal gave students a chance to return to the school after the walkout and avoid consequences. But she said some students didn't return, they were truant, and will face consequences.

However, one parent said her daughter returned to the school, was allowed to finish the day, but will be suspended Wednesday. The district spokesperson said she was unaware of the incident.

Meanwhile, the school board will continue its meetings regarding District 11 changes. They are open to the public. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan 15, from 6-8 p.m. at Mitchell High School. There will be another meeting at Wasson High School Wednesday, Jan 16, from 6-8p.m.
