Substitute teacher's aide allegedly body slams student

D-11 Substitute Teacher's Aide Suspended

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A District 11 spokesperson tells KRDO NewsChannel 13 that there was some sort of physical altercation involving a substitute educational assistant (non-licensed) and a Galileo School of Math and Science student on Thursday.

The student's aunt called KRDO NewsChannel 13 to say her nephew had been body-slammed by the man inside a classroom.  She reports that her nephew was taken to Penrose-St. Francis Hospital.

District 11 spokesperson Devra Ashby said she could not speak to the specifics of the incident or to any injuries to the child.  Ashby said that the substitute was immediately placed on unpaid administrative leave following the incident.

"In situations like this, we do have trained personal who do work from all sides to get to the bottom of things and we do also have to respect the privacy and the rights of staff as well," said Ashby.

She did confirm that police were called to the school because of the incident but it's not clear if criminal charges will be filed against the man.

The seventh-grade student was suffering from sore ribs according to his aunt, Lori Estrada. The injury is one thing but Estrada is also upset by the lack of communication from the school district.

"I didn't get notified," said Estrada. "I have my daughter and other nieces and nephews that go to the school and I wasn't notified about it until my mother called me."

The school district did release a statement for parents Thursday night regarding the confidentiality issues brought up by this incident. It clarified the employee's position at the school and also noted that the man is not a licensed educator.
