EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. - Colorado State Patrol is investigating a Sunday night two-car crash that killed a Colorado Springs teenager.
The crash happened north of Fountain on I-25 near mile marker 132 around 8:30 Sunday night.
Troopers say the snow-packed roads caused the driver of a truck to lose control. The truck rolled over and the driver was ejected. The driver, identified as David Collas, 19, was then hit by another car.
Troopers say Collas was not wearing his seat belt and died on scene.
The driver of the other car, Jamil Gadirov, 27, was wearing his seat belt and was not injured. Three other passengers in Gadirov's car were also wearing seat belts and were uninjured.
State Patrol is investigating whether excessive speed caused the crash.
Collas was the son of CSFD Battalion Chief Ted Collas and a seasonal employee with the CSFD Mitigation Crew. The Colorado Springs Fire Department issued a statement Monday saying it is "deeply saddened by the sudden loss of David Collas" and "thoughts and prayers are with the family."
Collas was also apparently an employee at YoYogurt in the 5800 block of Stetson Hills Boulevard. The frozen yogurt shop posted a statement on its Facebook page Monday, saying:
"The world has lost one of the best young men we have known. David Collas you have always been more than just an Employee, or friend to us, You were always family. You have brighten our lives along with our children's. We feel so honored that you made us a part of your life. We know Heaven is a brighter place today!! Our condolences to the Collas Family."
