Turkey shortage turns to surplus in Colorado Springs

Generous donors step forward after Monday appeal

Donors Fill Turkey Need at Marian House

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Marian House soup kitchen had fewer than two dozen turkeys on Monday but now has more than 600, after KRDO NewsChannel 13 brought attention to the need.

"I'm not surprised (but then) I am," said Rochelle Schlortt of Catholic Charities, the agency to which the Marian House belongs.  "We were all extremely worried about how we'd meet the need.  After your story, the turkeys began rolling in and they're still rolling in."

Schlortt said the soup kitchen has 636 turkeys as of Friday, enough to provide turkeys to some churches, the Care & Share food bank, and the Aztec homeless shelter.  She said the Marian House will use the bulk of the turkeys to serve a Thanksgiving Day meal to more than 600 needy people, and deliver food baskets to needy families.

However, Schlortt said the Marian House still needs trimmings for the holiday meal next Thursday.

"The instant potatoes, stuffing, canned vegetables and fruits, anything that you would normally have at a turkey dinner," she said.  "The cranberry sauce, gravy -- all the trimmings, basically."

Another soup kitchen also needs turkeys.  Bob Holmes of Homeward Pikes Peak said the Springs Rescue Mission is asking for donations for its Thanksgiving Day meal at City Auditorium.

Schlortt said some of the Marian House's surplus could be donated to the Springs Rescue Mission.

Schlortt sincerely thanks everyone who donated and who will donate in the coming days.

You can donate food or money at the Marian House, 14 West Bijou Street, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The Springs Rescue Mission, 5 West Las Vegas Street, accepts donations between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
