SECURITY-WIDEFIELD, Colo. - Fountain police are investigating after two of their cruisers were hit during a short chase.
Police received reports of two cars being stolen from the the 7300 blocks of Countryside Grove and Little Jimmy Grove early Friday morning (2/7/14). A 2009 Suburu and 2014 Chevrolet Malibu were taken according to investigators.
Officers say they spotted the Suburu at Metropolitan Street and Bobtail Drive in Security-Widefield. The driver, who police have identified as Alyssa Mayer, 19, took off on Metropolitan Street and hit two police vehicles, according to investigators.
Katherine, who didn't want to share her last name, had an interesting morning.
"I didn't know what was going on, but the fact that they were running from two cop cars in the complex, and see (more police vehicles) show up, I know something wasn't right," she said.
The Malibu, which police say was driven by Dennis Krum, 19, took off towards Fontaine Boulevard, according to investigators. The vehicles front tire separated from its wheel near Fontaine and Security boulevards. Police say Krum then ran away and was later arrested in the 50 block of Security Boulevard.
Two officers and the two suspects suffered minor injuries.
Fountain Police Deputy Chief Bob Elder said one of the vehicles had On-Star, which helped them find it.
"We usually find stolen vehicles through that kind of technology or LPR, our license plate reader," he said.
Elder feels that without the vehicle technology, officers wouldn't have chased after the cars, because the roads were icy, and it could have been dangerous.
He said the technology has helped his officers find four vehicles in two weeks.
Police say the pair drove to Fountain in a car that was reported stolen out of Colorado Springs Thursday night.
Krum and Mayer are facing numerous charges. The investigation is ongoing.
