UPDATE: 'Fatal attraction killer' moved into halfway house

'Fatal attraction killer' moved into halfway house

DENVER - The Department of Corrections says Jennifer Reali has been transferred to a halfway house, despite having her parole denied three years ago.

A spokesperson says Reali met placement criteria to be transferred to a halfway house in Denver. The spokesperson says the transfer was based on behavior, and that this process has been in motion for some time.

Reali was convicted of first-degree murder in 1992 for killing her boyfriend's wife, Dianne Hood, outside of a Colorado Springs lupus support meeting in 1990.

Reali had disguised herself in military-style clothing and a ski mask. She shot Hood with a .45-caliber revolver.

Dianne Hood's husband, Brian Hood, was sentenced to 22 years in prison following his conviction for second-degree murder and conspiracy in December 1991. He claimed Reali had a "fatal attraction" for him and killed his wife on her own.

Jennifer Reali's parole was denied in 2011, even though her life sentence was commuted by Gov. Bill Ritter before he left office.

Dan Zook was assistant district attorney at the time. At the parole hearing, he said she bought the gun and ammunition, and then shot Diane a second time as she was pleading for her life.

Reali is not out on parole and she has not been released from the Department of Corrections system.

Dianne Hood's friend Darla Blue has forgiven Reali, but was disappointed to hear she was transferred.

"Even with that forgiveness, I don't think I would want them to be able to just walk away from this," said Blue.

She said Reali needs to serve more time for the killing.

"She had planned this out and the fact that you have someone capable of doing that and following through with it. To me, that tells me what kind of person you are dealing with," said Blue.

The correctional facility says it's not uncommon for this kind of transfer to happen with an offender, and the community corrections board has been looking into this transfer for some time.
