Victims in double homicide identified

PEYTON, Colo. - The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says a man killed his wife and mother before taking his own life.

The victims in Monday's double homicide on Oasis Avenue in Peyton have been identified as Annetta Buchanan, 50, and Grace Buchanan, 89.

The suspected in this case is James Buchanan. Deputies say Annetta Buchanan was his wife, and Grace Buchanan was his mother.

Deputies were called to the home at 19870 Oasis Ave. at around 4:15 p.m. Monday. The Sheriff's Office says James Buchanan called an out-of-state family member about the murders, and that's who called them.

Deputies arrived at the home to find the two women shot to death inside and James Buchanan driving away. They began chasing him east on Highway 94. Troopers from the Colorado State Patrol joined in the pursuit.

Deputies and troopers chased Buchanan into Lincoln County before troopers were able to execute a pursuit intervention technique, causing his car to slide off the road.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says James Buchanan took his own life as soon as his car came to a stop.

The deaths of Annetta Buchanan and Grace Buchanan have been ruled homicides. The coroner's office confirms they were shot to death. James Buchanan also died of a gunshot wound. His death has been ruled a suicide.

There have been six homicides in unincorporated El Paso County so far in 2013.
