Volunteer firefighter walks 26 miles to raise money

Firefighter Goes Distance to raise money

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A local firefighter walked about 26 miles on Saturday from Divide to Colorado Springs to raise money for the Victor Volunteer Fire Department.

Nathan Quist is the Safety Officer at Victor Volunteer Fire Dept.  Quist told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that he thought of the idea and posted it on his Facebook page to ask others what they thought.

"They said I've lost my mind," Quist said.  "I told them it's all for them."

Quist described the need his department has for new gear, and how difficult it is for an all-volunteer department.

"It costs roughly $3,000 to gear head-to-toe one guy.  That's really hard to come by, especially being in the small town we're in," Quist said.

Quist started his journey in Divide around 7:00 a.m. He made it to 8th Street and Cimarron Street in Colorado Springs around 2:00 p.m.

Other volunteer fire department firefighters waited for Quist in Colorado Springs and helped raise money.  Christopher "Cotton" Pease from the Four Mile Fire District told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that he tries to help out his fellow firefighters.

"It's a huge brotherhood.  I"m proud to be part of it," Pease said.

Pease said he's been wearing the same bunker gear since 1999.  Fire safety regulations recommend gear be replaced every ten years.

"We have an inner liner here inside these coats," Pease said.  "It's a rubber-made material.  Sometimes I notice that my liner might get a little more soaked on the inside of the liner where it shouldn't."

Pease said even though their departments are not paid, they do the best they can and face the same challenges as paid departments.

Quist set up a website to collect donations.  Click here for more information on how to donate.
