Volunteer fixes fence smashed by stolen police cruiser

A Colorado Springs business owner took matters into his own hands when he saw a family struggling to fix a fence smashed by a stolen police cruiser.

David Law, the owner of Law Fence Company, said he saw the story on KRDO NewsChannel 13 last month and decided to help.

On July 22, a man in police custody, handcuffed in the backseat of a police cruiser, was somehow able to get out of the handcuffs, climb through the dividing window and get behind the wheel of the police car.

Police said 21-year-old Dustin Guinn then sideswiped several cars before crashing into the yard of Mark and Sheila Howland on Corona Avenue.

Days after the crash destroyed the couple's fence, Mark and Sheila told KRDO they were frustrated the city wouldn't pay for the damages.

"It's aggravating just because somebody else destroyed our fence and we have to pay for it," Mark told KRDO in July.

Law contacted the Howlands and offered to make the repairs for free.

"She was surprised that someone would come down and do it for free," Law said. "She was relieved that it was going to get taken care of and it wasn't an eyesore for the neighborhood."

Law said the repair work would normally cost several hundred dollars, but he offset costs by using leftover chain-link material his company had.

"It feels good to give back," Law said. "I just hope she gives back one day when she can. That's the key. If you can find a way to help the community and volunteer your time, do it."

"He's an angel," Sheila said after seeing the repaired fence. "He's got a big heart. I don't have to look at a total wreck anymore.'

Sheila said she still believes the city should have paid for the repairs but is grateful for Law's generosity.
