SOUTHERN COLORADO - Drivers are anxious for the I-25 widening project to be finished, but the Colorado Department of Transportation is waiting for Mother Nature to cooperate.
It's the stretch of the interstate between the North Gate exit and Monument.
The northbound side is open to three lanes now, but southbound still needs a third lane. CDOT says Southern Colorado's quick cold and warm weather changes have put a hold on that new lane. Work should pick up again by mid-April.
"What they're waiting for is when the nighttime temperature stays above freezing than the earth work can continue to progress," said CDOT Project Engineer Wayne Pittman. "But if it's freezing and they work it, that frost just keeps going deeper into the ground. You're fighting mother nature to the point where you're wasting money."
CDOT's target date to finish work on I-25 is the fourth of July.
