Weekend Cleanup Events: Apr. 26, 2014

Tackle the Trash: County-Wide Spring Cleaning Day

El Paso County is hosting Tackle the Trash, a County-wide "spring cleaning" event on Saturday, April 26, 2014 and encouraging civic organizations, churches, scout groups, schools, and individuals to participate. Volunteers will pick up trash in six specific areas around County parks, trails, public areas, creeks and roadways.  El Paso County Commissioners will greet volunteers at various check-in sites beginning at  9 a.m. The County will provide trash bags and safety vests. Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves and bottled water.

Those younger than 16 must be supervised by an adult. 

Tackle the Trash Check-In Sites (all open at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, April 26, 2014):  
-Monument Area / New Santa Fe Regional Trail: Check-in at 3rd Street Trailhead, between Adams Street and Beacon Lite Road
-Monument  Fountain Area / Fountain Creek Regional Park: Check-in at the park, 2010 Duckwood, Fountain  
-Falcon Area / Rock Island Regional Trail: Check-in at Falcon Trailhead, Falcon  
-Bear Creek Regional Park / Surrounding Areas: Check-in at the park, 21st Street and Cresta Road, Colorado Springs  
-Calhan Area/ El Paso County Fairgrounds: Check-in at the fairgrounds, 10th Street, Calhan  
-Downtown Colorado Springs: Check-in at Centennial Hall, 200 S. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs  

Bessemer Neighborhood Cleanup

The annual Bessemer Neighborhood Cleanup is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 26.  The cleanup will be held in the empty lot at the corner of Abriendo Avenue and Canal Street. The main entrance to the cleanup site can be accessed by traveling southbound on Abriendo Avenue. Participants must pre-purchase tickets to dispose of waste at the cleanup. Tickets for a level pickup truckload are $15 each, with a limit of two per household. A limited number of seniors and disabled residents, without any means of delivery, may request curbside pick-up assistance with ID by signing up when tickets are purchased by April 23.

Lake Pueblo State Park Cleanup Day

Here's a way to help our little corner of the planet for Earth Day - volunteer for the annual clean-up day at Lake Pueblo State Park, 9 a.m.-noon, April 26.

Park entry fees are waived for volunteers, and lunch will be provided to everyone who helps out. Meet at the Lake Pueblo Quail Run group picnic area.

Volunteers will pick up trash throughout the park, along the shore of the reservoir and from the banks of the Arkansas River.  Come by yourself or bring the whole family. Remember to bring work boots, gloves, a hat and water.

Date:   Saturday, April 26
Time:   Cleanup kickoff - 9:00 a.m.
           Ribbon-cutting ceremony of new playground - 11:00 a.m.
Where: Monument Valley Park

Note: Go to the entrance of Monument Valley Park at intersection of Fontenaro St. and Culebra Ave.                        
The Spruce Up the Springs event will include playground and park beautification volunteer projects and a Pikes Peak Greenway and Monument Creek stormwater cleanup. These park cleanups are part of the Mayor's Spirit of the Springs initiatives.
