Weekend traffic shift planned for US 24 in Ute Pass

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. - The Colorado Department of Transportation says it will be shifting traffic on US 24 from the westbound lanes to the eastbound lanes on Saturday evening (4/12/14).

The lane shift, which will happen about a mile west of Manitou Springs, is part of an ongoing project to improve water flow under the highway.

The shift is expected to begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday and be complete by 1 a.m. Sunday, with one lane of traffic in each direction.

Extra delays can be expected from Saturday evening through about noon on Sunday.

The highway will remain reduced to one lane in each direction for about five weeks, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph and vehicles wider than 12 feet will not be allowed to travel through the work zone.

All four lanes of U.S. 24 are expected to be open to traffic by Thursday, May 22.

CDOT is installing the other half of an extra-large concrete box culvert, designed to carry excessive amounts of water.  It measures 24 feet wide by 10 feet high, and is ten times larger than the 72 inch metal pipe that used to be under the highway.
