Whether victims had home alarm system is unknown

Home alarm system unknown in victims' house

The investigation into the shooting deaths of a Fort Carson soldier and his pregnant wife is ongoing.
There are still many unanswered questions, including whether or not the couple had a home security system.

There is an ADT Security sign in the front yard, but the police department and ADT have not confirmed if there was a working alarm system.

Peter Lupia with SWAT Home Security said yard signs don't necessarily mean there is an alarm system.

"Just having a sign doesn't mean you are secure. If a burglar has made it their intention to come into the house, they will have looked in windows, doors and done observations," said Lupia.

Lupia suggested having a home alarm system, along with a yard sign, to best protect your home.

There are two types of home security systems, a self-monitoring system and a professional-monitoring system, said Lupia.

The self-monitoring system will sound alarms when a zone in the home is breached, but will not contact authorities.

"If you're not home and it's not set up loud enough for neighbors to hear, no one will call police," said Lupia.

A professional-monitoring system will notify the homeowner, via telephone, text message or email, and contact police, said Lupia.

"You have the maximum amount of people working to secure your property as quickly as possible," he said.

The cost of a home security system ranges anywhere from less than $1 a day to around $2 a day.
