Wife defends man accused of sexual assault

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A man who police say had access to several children at a Colorado Springs church has been arrested for sexual assault on a child.

Antonio Mendoza is a member of Iglesia de Jesucristo Pentecostal church, which is near Academy Blvd. and Galley Rd.

The investigation into Mendoza began on March 19, 2014 when officers were called to Memorial Hospital Central to investigate a report of a sexual assault on a child.

The initial information provided to detectives was that Mendoza had inappropriate sexual contact with an underage girl who also goes to the church. Police said in interviews with Mendoza, he admitted he had sexual contact with the girl.

But his wife, Maria Luna said he is not guilty.

"Not my husband," she said. "No, he's not guilty of what he's accused of."

Luna said the couple has two children, and that Mendoza has been a good father and husband.

"We've been an honorable family, a decent family," she said. "My husband is an honorable and decent man, that I think doesn't deserve to be in this situation."

Police say that on March 21, 2014, detectives from the Crimes Against Children Unit learned that Mendoza may have had access to several more children at the church. They are now concerned about the possibility there could be other victims. They ask that if there are, they contact police.
