Woman killed in Highway 24 crash

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. - The Colorado State Patrol says a woman from Peyton died in a crash at Highway 24 and Judge Orr Road Thursday (12/12/13). The crash happened at 12:30 p.m.

Troopers say A 2006 Chevrolet Suburban was traveling westbound on Highway 24 when the driver swerved into the eastbound lane. A 2013 Kia Soul was traveling eastbound on Highway 24 when it was hit head-on by the Chevrolet Suburban. After the impact the Chevrolet came to a rest off the north side of Highway 24. The Kia was pushed backwards off the south side of the road.

The driver of the Chevrolet was identified as Gene Schroeder, 68, of Colorado Springs. She was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and sustained serious injuries. She was flown by Flight for Life to Penrose Hospital.

The driver of the Kia is a 68-year-old woman from Peyton. Her name has not been released. Troopers say she was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the accident scene.

The crash is still under investigation. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected.
