Manitou Springs, Colo. -

Loud sirens blasted all through Manitou Springs Thursday afternoon (6/5/14) as law enforcement officers tested its flash flood warning system.

Manitou Springs Police Chief Joe Ribeiro says the sirens are a last resort signaling a potential flood is just minutes away.

"The flood siren is our last ditch effort," Ribeiro said.  "When the siren is going that's a message is to seek higher ground immediately and that a flood is imminent."

Ribeiro remembers last year when the sirens went off some people rushed to Fountain Creek instead of playing it safe and leaving the area. Residents and business owners say they are grateful for this test.
