COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Air Force Academy says its famous chapel will close for between three and four years beginning in the summer of 2018.
The Academy says the closure is necessary to complete critical repairs to the 53-year-old building.
The Academy and the Air Force Civil Engineer Center have developed a comprehensive restoration plan that replaces the aluminum skin, stiffens the steel super structure, installs a redundant water barrier, and removes and cleans the 24,000 original stain glass pieces.
The project will not modify or alter the interior spaces of the chapel.
The Academy says that The Cadet Chapel is the most visited man-made attraction in the state of Colorado.
Alternate worship locations for the faith groups that use the chapel are currently being identified.
