WASHINGTON - The defense department has identified a U.S. Navy sailor who died during an al-Qaida raid Sunday morning. He was Chief Special Warfare Operator William "Ryan" Owens.
Owens was from Peoria, Illinois. He served on an East Coast-based Special Warfare unit.
"I extend my condolences to the family and shipmates of Chief Petty Officer William "Ryan" Owens," Sec. of Defense Jim Mattis said in a statement. "Ryan gave his full measure for our nation, and in performing his duty, he upheld the noblest standard of military service. The United States would not long exist were it not for the selfless commitment of such warriors."
U.S. Central Command said in a statement that three service members were wounded in the raid and that a fourth one was injured in a "hard landing."
Fourteen al-Qaida militants were killed.
