Wear Red Friday Hero: Trent Nelson Ervin

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo - A herculean effort to move a 200 pound sandbag is what motivates First Lieutenant Trent Nelson Ervin to motivate others.  Ervin explained to me why this bag used in the official World Strongman Championship competition is so important to train others, "It simulates pulling out any kind of casualty you may have on the battlefield.  Dragging your buddy to safety is key to saving a life.  Normally you are going to cradle that soldier and pull him.  It's important for us soldiers to take care of someone in battle if they are wounded in any way."

This bag drag at the Tactical Athlete Program Gym at Fort Carson is not for the faint of heart.  You have to lift it and go back and forth between markers that are 50 feet apart from one another.   First Lieutenant Ervin had set the record at 350 feet but was beat the morning that we videoed his story.  It's not about records for Ervin, it's about motivation, "99 percent of the time people don't know how far they can push themselves until others get involved and motivate them."  Ervin hasn't given up trying to best that new record.

First Lieutenant Derek Proctor sees that motivation first hand from Ervin, "His personality is contagious.  He's got a high morale. He is always motivate to do stuff.  He's always out there in front with that energy."

Lieutenant Colonel Allen Leth Junior sees that inspiration from Ervin, too.  It's something Leth is glad to see in his junior officers, "Trent wants to further inspire his own soldiers as well as those in the brigade."

First Lieutenant Ervin is an example for other soldiers and his community.  He lives that Wear Red Friday Hero mantra everyday.  That's why we chose him for this Wear Red Friday Hero honor.  It's something he appreciates but, "I don't see what I do on a daily basis as being a hero.  It's me doing my job."  Ervin is a platoon leader in Company A, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
