Body found in creek confirmed as missing teen
Rose Hammes went for a walk during Monday's flooding and never returned
Colorado Springs police confirmed Tuesday morning that a body found in a creek shortly after midnight is that of a missing teenager.
Rose Hammes, 17, went for a walk by herself around 3 p.m. Monday. When it started to rain heavily, she took shelter under a bridge near Maizeland Road and Academy Boulevard.
Her father, Roman Hammes, says Rose called home to check in and was offered a ride, but the teen decided to wait out the storm.
Later, when her parents were unable to make contact with, they notified police.
Shortly after midnight, a body was found in Sand Creek on Edison Avenue between Murray and Wooten. Officials said at the time that the description matched that of the missing teenager.
Several hours later, after an autopsy, it was confirmed that the body was that of Rose. Her cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma and drowning.
