Man dies after running into fire at Burning Man festival

PERSHING COUNTY, Nev. - A man has died after running into the burning "Man" at the well-known Nevada festival, according to the Pershing County Sheriff's Office in Nevada.

Aaron Joel Mitchell, 31, was one of the thousands that attended this year's festival that is 120 miles north of Reno.

On Saturday night, festival organizers set fire to the "Man," which is a wooden structure constructed to look like a male figure.

The Sheriff's Office stated that Mitchell broke through two levels of security guards to get to the structure. Medical officials on site tried to pull him out but falling portions of the burning "Man" stopped them. Crews had to wait until the structure fell before they could safely remove Mitchell from the debris.

Mitchell was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Calif. where he was pronounced dead on Sunday morning.

The Sheriff's Office said that Mitchell was not under the influence of alcohol and toxicology screening is pending.

Mitchell was a US Citizen who lived in Switzerland with his wife.
