President Donald Trump nominated Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, Trump announced Jan. 31 at the White House. Here's a bit more on the 49-year-old federal appellate judge.
Gorsuch reportedly criticized the president in February, telling Sen. Richard Blumenthal that Trump's Twitter attacks of a federal judge were demoralizing. Trump blamed Blumenthal for misrepresenting Gorsuch's comments.
Gorsuch is married to his wife Louise. He enjoys fly fishing and is a lifelong Colorado resident. The couple has two daughers and lives on a farm in Boulder with two horses, two dogs and a barn cat.
He is a former clerk for justices Byron White and Anthony Kennedy.
Gorsuch holds a deep admiration for the late Justice Antonin Scalia. President Donald Trump, while announcing Gorsuch as his nominee, said Scalia was on his mind through much of his deliberations on who to nominate. Gorsuch called Scalia a "lion of the law."
Like Scalia, Gorsuch attended Ivy League schools. He also attended Oxford.
Gorsuch is perhaps most well known for a case called Hobby Lobby where he ruled in favor of closely held corporations who object to the contraceptive mandate in Obamacare.
His age is of particular appeal to Republicans. At 49, he could carry on Trump's legacy long after the President leaves office.
