2015: Nine people are killed in a mass shooting during a Bible study class at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Eight people died at the scene with another victim dying at a hospital. Dylann Roof, 21, was arrested the following day and, according to police, confessed and told investigators he wanted to start a race war. Roof is charged with 33 federal offenses, including hate crime charges for allegedly targeting his victims on the basis of their race and religion, and will be tried in November 2016. Federal prosecutors are expected to pursue the death penalty during the trial.
