Suspect Broke Windows And Doors

LA JUNTA, Colo. - A suspect in the vandalism of the Otero County Courthouse turned himself in to the Sheriff's Office Monday night.

Justin Wade Steven, 34, of La Junta was wanted in connection with the break in and damage that occurred at the Otero County Courthouse on Nov. 23. He is being held on a $10,000 bond out of Otero County and smaller bond out of Larimer County, Fort Collins.

Otero County Sheriff's deputies say Steven broke into the Otero County Courthouse and vandalized the building

A County employee reported a burglary around 5:30 a.m.

Deputies and La Junta Police officers searched the building and found a small fire in the hallway near the south front steps and a window broken in the door to an office. The south front door of the courthouse was broken out by a chair and there was also graffiti on several walls upstairs.

The Otero County Sheriff?s Office obtained a warrant for Steven for Burglary in the Second Degree, Arson and Criminal Mischief over $1,000.

No one was found in the building but deputies say they had evidence that led to the identification of the suspect. Deputies say it appears Steven may have hidden in the Courthouse the previous evening before the building was locked down.

The case is still under investigation.
