Police search for gunman after teen shot in Palmer Park
Colorado Springs police are stepping up patrols near a popular park after a teenager was shot and wounded on Monday night.
Police say that a 15-year-old boy was hanging out in the park around 7:30 p.m. Monday when an armed man approached him and demanded jewelry and cash. The teen told the robber he didn't have any money and that's when police say the man shot him in the shoulder. The teen is expected to be okay.
Palmer Park is commonly frequented by children. Parents were shocked to hear of a shooting before dark.
"It's really unnerving," Ahna Hall told KRDO NewsChannel 13. Hall and her 2-year-old son were playing in the park on Monday night. They left around 6:30 p.m. and didn't hear anything about the shooting until Tuesday morning.
"There were so many people around," Hall said. "It's just really frightening to know that something like that happened shortly after we were here."
The suspect is described as a black man, about 6 feet tall with shoulder-length dreadlocks. He had a scruffy beard and a "grill" in his teeth. He was last seen wearing a black shirt and tan pants.
Police ask that if anyone has information about the shooting, call CSPD at 719-444-7000.
