Democrats outvoting Republicans in early results for Pueblo recall election

Democrats outvoting Republicans in Pueblo recall election

PUEBLO, Colo. - More than 25 percent of active voters in state Sen. Angela Giron's district have cast their votes. As of Sunday night, Democrats had outvoted Republicans by nearly 3,000 votes.

On Sunday, 2,670 people voted. Many were intent on avoiding possible long lines on Election Day.

"Someone came knocking on my door and said 'don't forget that you can go vote today early'," said Sunshine Martinez. "But the real reason why I came was to vote 'no' on the recall for Angela Giron."

Victor Vigil voted yes on the recall. "It's an agenda that the Democrats have and that's to do away with the Second Amendment and our right to bear arms. The Constitution provides that right and I'll not stand for it, that's why I came to vote," he said.

Inside Republican headquarters, George Rivera spent the day calling and thanking those who signed the recall petition. According to Pueblo Freedom and Rights, the group that organized the recall efforts, half of the petition signers haven't voted.

"From what I've been told, Republicans are notorious for waiting until Election Day. I guess maybe because they're traditionalist who say 'you know what? Election Day is the tenth of September'," Rivera said.

Two miles away, Giron had just come back from a day spent knocking on more than 100 doors. She said many voters weren't home when she first stopped by Sunday morning so she came back that afternoon.

Giron's district leans liberal but 20 percent of those who've already voted aren't affiliated with either major party. As for persuading them, Giron said it's too late to change voters' minds.

"Yeah, I think it'll be a close election," Giron said.

To date, 21,014 people have voted in the District 3 recall election.

There are eleven polling locations in District 3. On Monday, polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, visit www.pueblovotes.com
