Gov. doesn't have any answers about Waldo Canyon fire

MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. - We know why there are flash floods in Manitou Springs and on Highway 24…the Waldo Canyon fire.  We don't know much about how the Waldo Canyon fire and that has people getting impatient with the lack of information.

"All I know is the authorities do know more than they've revealed to the public. It's just frustrating that no one has been brought to justice in either fire," Patrick Haven said on Facebook.

"I feel let down by the mayor and the Sheriff who only come up with lame excuses," Luis Diaz wrote on Facebook.

The head of the investigation into the fire, Lt. Adrian Vasquez with the Colorado Springs Police Department, last spoke with the media in June.

"We've certainly collected all the evidence, we've got our forensic information back," Lt. Vasquez said.

But investigators will only say they believe the fire was human caused and that they have pinpointed an origin.  No more details, they say, because if someone does come forward with information, they want to be able to verify their story.

"Right now, without somebody coming forward I think we are in a bit of a stall," Lt. Vasquez said.

After his tour of Manitou Springs last week, KRDO asked Governor John Hickenlooper if more information released could help the public come forward with more tips.

"Certainly understand the frustration but it's not my job to second guess.  My job's to support local officials here. It's not to come down and second guess them," Hickenlooper said.

The fire burned more than 18,000 acres, killed two people and destroyed 346 homes in the Mountain Shadows neighborhood in west Colorado Springs.

One person died in the flash floods on Highway 24 earlier this month, although the District Attorney's office says because that death didn't happen during the fire or the immediate evacuation, that death wouldn't be tied to any possible future prosecutions of the Waldo Canyon fire.

A 100-thousand dollar reward is still out there for any information that could lead to an arrest in the case.
