A 13-year-old is recovering at a Denver hospital after being shot in the chest with a pellet gun.
Officers were called to the area of Pine and Summit at around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2014.
When officers arrived, they found the teen lying in the street with his clothing scattered around him. He was rushed to the hospital where doctors determined that he had been shot in the chest with a pellet gun. Police say the pellet entered his chest and then deflected downward, coming to a rest between vital organs.
The teen was transferred to a hospital in Denver and was last reported in stable condition.
Investigators say they believe the shooting happened in the 400 block of Washington St. They say the teen may have been trying to steal marijuana plants from a grow in the backyard of a home around the time of the shooting.
Police say Jason Lucero, 34, pulled the trigger. They say Lucero said he walked out onto his porch and shot an intruder, but detectives say the teen was in a neighboring yard when he was shot.
Lucero was arrested and is facing charges for second degree assault.
