PUEBLO, Colo. - The Pueblo Zoo announced the death of its male red panda, Damien, on Tuesday.
The zoo says Damien succumbed to a large, inoperable tumor.
The average lifespan for a red panda in the wild is eight years. They sometimes live into their teens in captivity. Damien was 10.
The zoo noted that just a week ago it shared photos on Facebook of Damien training, happily eating grapes and showing no symptoms.
The zoo says wild animals often hide illness as a survival technique.
