Vote pushed back on controversial gravel pit in Pueblo County

Vote pushed back on controversial...

PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. - The Pueblo County Planning Commission heard an earful Wednesday night from people opposing a new gravel pit in Southeastern Pueblo County.

The pit to be put in by Fremont Paving and Redi-Mix is proposed to be placed south of Olson Road and east of 40th Lane in Avondale.

Supporters of the pit say adding the business to the area is a good thing.

But opponents say the pit will cause safety, environmental and wildlife concerns.

Many opponents are specifically concerned about the potential 70 trucks navigating by schools every day on their haul route.

"I think parents need to get riled up about the fact that they are going to have all of these trucks going by their schools for 15 years," Velma Rinks said.

The commission heard about five hours of testimony and plan to vote on April 24.
