Rocky Ford officer stabbed in the neck; suspect caught after stealing police car

ROCKY FORD, Colo. - UPDATE: Colorado State Police say Shayanne Hope Maestas was arrested Tuesday night after allegedly stabbing a Rocky Ford police officer and stealing his car.

Maestas was found about 25 miles south of Rocky Ford and was taken into custody without incident. We don't yet know what criminal charges she faces.

The police officer, who hasn't been identified, was taken to a local hospital with a neck injury. He's expected to survive.


A Rocky Ford police officer was stabbed in the neck Tuesday, and the suspect then took the officer's car and fled the scene.

Police tell us the officer was dispatched to a call in the 500 block of N. 11th Street (MAP) for a welfare check around 12:30 p.m.

The homeowner answered the door, but that's when the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Shayanne Hope Maestas, came out from behind her and allegedly stabbed the officer in the neck.

The officer is in the hospital after being stabbed near the carotid artery, but he's expected to survive. 

Maestas was reportedly seen south of Rocky Ford. It's assumed she is armed and extremely dangerous. The car is described as a marked Dodge Charger with the license plate QTL086.

Schools in Rocky Ford were placed on lockout, according to district officials.
