COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

Investigators say a man walked into Colorado Springs police headquarters and exposed himself Tuesday evening.

Keith Gardner, 38, is facing indecent exposure charges.  Officers say Gardner walked into the Police Operations Center in the 700 block of S. Nevada Avenue around 8 p.m. and took off his pants, exposing himself in the lobby.

Police said Gardner then ran away before officers from the Gold Hill Division arrived. They said they later found Gardner running through the 800 block of South Nevada Avenue wearing no clothes.

Gardner was arrested and booked at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.

"This was not the first time that we had interaction (with him) yesterday," said Lt. Catherine Buckley.  "We'd had several calls for service on him.  This was actually the second time during the day that he had exposed himself to other people."

Buckley said it's unclear whether Gardner is homeless, mentally ill, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or voyeuristic.

"Dealing with nudity on the beat happens more often than people realize," she said.  "We keep extra sets of clothing and blankets available if needed.  Some people just like exposing themselves to police officers."

Indecent exposure is a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum jail term of 18 months and/or a fine of up to $5,000.

Buckley said if no one posts bond for Gardner, a judge may ultimately decide what happens to him.
