31-year-old climber dies on Mt. Princeton

CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo. - A 31-year-old died while climbing Mt. Princeton on Monday. 

Matthew Wayne Lackey, 31, from Boulder, Colo. died from his injuries after falling around 40 feet and then tumbling an additional 100 feet down the side of Mt. Princeton.

While Lackey was climbing the Chalk Cliff area, he grabbed a loose boulder dislodging it and causing him to lose his balance. 

Lackey and his friends were climbing with out the proper gear, according to the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office. 

The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office along with Chaffee County EMS, Chaffee County Search and Rescue, North and South, and Chaffee Fire responded just before 1 p.m.

Witnesses told deputies that they had seen  a rock rolling down the hill followed by a man falling.

When rescue crews finally made it to Lackey, he had suffered serious injuries and they had to immediately start giving him first aid.  The were unsuccessful at reviving him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
