Drag race in Otero Co. ends in 5 injuries, including 2 toddlers

OTERO COUNTY, Colo. - Colorado State Patrol is investigating a crash from Saturday that left 5 injured, including two toddlers.

Apparently, a 17-year-old driving a white Chevy pickup was racing Merisa Maldonado, 20, in a blue Chevy Venture van along Otero County Road 27, just .5 miles south of Colorado 50, at around 4:30 p.m. on April 8.

The teen lost control and drove off into the ditch. The truck rolled two times and landed in a field.

Maldonado, who had a 1-year-old, 2-year-old and a 12-year-old in her vehicle at the time of the crash, tried to maneuver around the truck and also drove off into the ditch. Her van rolled at least 1 time.

Everyone involved was wearing a seatbelt and the toddlers were also in a car seat. Everyone was taken to Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries.

CSP does not believe alcohol was involved in the crash.
