Engine failure brings plane down near Salida

CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo. - A plane crashed just north of Harriet Alexander Field on Wednesday night.

A single engine Cessna 210 came down in a hay meadow near Salida at around 7:18 p.m. The pilot, Serena Welcher, 34, from Page, Ariz. walked away from the crash and was able to call emergency personnel.

Welcher told officials that she was planning on spending the night in Salida, but as she was approaching the airport, her engine began to fail and her plane lost power.

The plane hit a center pivot sprinkler system causing moderate to severe damage to both the plane and the sprinkler system.

Fortunately, Welcher walked away with no injuries.

This is an ongoing investigation.
