WATCH: Body cam footage of...

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. - The body camera footage is out, showing the shooting that happened last week between a Douglas County deputy and an armed suspect.

Deputy Brad Proulx pulled his vehicle over near County Line Road and Sante Fe Road to check on what looked like a person in need and was met with Deyon Marcus Rivas-Maestas holding an "AR-15 type rifle."

“The Deputy gave the subject verbal commands,” the sheriff’s office stated. “The Deputy feared for his life and deployed his service weapon.”

Investigators said the deputy was “forced to take action” and “a guardian had to become a warrior in a split second.”

Rivas-Maestas was shot once in the arm. He was taken to the hospital where he had surgery. Once he had recovered, he was taken to the Douglas County Detention Center and is facing charges of first-degree assault.
