The USA Pro Challenge is starting to cause road closures and delays in Colorado Springs today.
Some of the best cyclists in the world participate in the USA Pro Challenge. The seven-stage race goes through several Colorado cities. It will go through Colorado Springs Thursday. The city already began preparing for the event. There are signs announcing parking restrictions and delays.
Closures have already happened on Tejon between Kiowa and Colorado. Also Pikes Peak is closed between Cascade and Nevada.
While drivers in Colorado Springs decided to leave their cars at home, others say they don't mind the road closures since the bike race is back in the city.
"Generally, if I know something like this will happen I will walk," Anders Byrns said.
"It's exciting to have events come through the city, especially downtown," Christine Lowenberg said.
Businesses are split on the impact the closures will have.
"It's an opportunity to really get some exposure, there's going to be hundreds and hundreds of people out there watching the race, so it's our opportunity to go talk to them and let them know about French Fry Heaven, so we're excited about it," French Fry Heaven owner George Stone said.
It will have the opposite effect at D Bierfeldt Master Jeweler.
"Because they have the street closures, our customers can't get to us," owner Dale Bierfeldt said. "It can be frustrating because we're here to try to earn make a living, and as soon as the streets are closed down, the business is greatly affected by it."
Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach is expecting 50,000 people to come for the bike race in the city.
